Data Curation Insights: Interview with Helen Berman, director of RCSB Protein Data Bank

The third interview of the Data Curation Insights-series is now available on our website.

Edward Curry, BIG-member and member of the Digital Enterprise Research Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), arranged an interview with Professor Helen M. Berman, director of the RCSB Protein Data Bank—one of the member organizations of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank and a Board of Governors Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers University. A structural biologist, her work includes structural analysis of protein-nucleic acid complexes, and the role of water in molecular interactions. She is also the founder and director of the Nucleic Acid Database, and leads the Protein Structure Initiative Structural Genomics Knowledge Base.

The interview gives insights into Helen's background at the Protein Data Bank, where she has been involved for more than 40 years and where a high value has always been placed on the value of big data with extensive meta data curation, even though this view was not shared at the time.

During the Interview, Helen not only talks about the value of meta data for big data but also explains the development which lead to the current situation, how they treat data curation currently and how they see it in the future.
